Two Very Different Halves of Wyandotte County

Hydroseeding in Kansas City, Kansas covers ground that changes a lot from east to west. The city sits at Kaw Point, where the Kansas River meets the Missouri. Its eastern neighborhoods climb hills and bluffs, while the western part of Wyandotte County has room for new homes, commercial sites and the Village West district at I-70 and I-435.

Hillside yards in the east

Neighborhood names like Strawberry Hill, Polish Hill, Quindaro Bluffs and Mount Marty tell you what the ground is like. On a steep front yard, regular seed washes downhill before it sprouts. On those slopes we spray bonded fiber matrix or a heavier hydromulch, adding straw blankets where the grade is steepest.

Open ground in the west

Out west, the work looks different: lots cut from pasture, commercial pads and road shoulders that need stabilizing. We handle silt fence installation, inlet protection and final seeding so a project can close its stormwater requirements.

River bottoms and floods

The city has flooded in the Great Flood of 1951 and again in 1993. Low ground along the rivers often has silty floodplain soils, like the Kennebec series that the USDA describes as rarely to frequently flooded. On low lots we take extra care with grading to keep water flowing away from the house, and we pick seed that can handle wet spells.

Climate

The city sits in USDA hardiness zone 6, and July averages about 81 degrees around the clock. Early fall is our preferred window for cool-season lawns, with spring as the second choice.

Kansas City Questions

Can you seed a steep front yard on Strawberry Hill?

Yes. Steep yards get heavier mulch or a blanket so the seed is not carried downhill by the first rain.

Do you work on commercial sites near Village West?

Yes. That covers silt fence, inlet protection and seeding for final stabilization.

My lot is low and stays wet after storms. What helps?

Regrading to move water away and a seed mix that tolerates wet periods. Sometimes a drainage trench is needed, which our grading crew can dig.

Is hardiness zone 6 good for fescue?

Yes. Tall fescue is a common choice here for sunny lawns.
