Grass for an Old Road Town
Hydroseeding in Shawnee covers a city of almost 43 square miles that began as a Shawnee Indian mission in 1831 and was laid out as a town in 1857. It grew along a government road linking Fort Leavenworth and Fort Riley, and that long history means the east side has older, settled yards while the city's open ground still sees new homes go up.
Near Shawnee Mission Park
Shawnee Mission Park is a 1,600-acre park with a 120-acre lake. Homes near it often back up to woods or open grass that slopes toward water. When we seed one of those yards, the goal is to keep loose soil from running off the lot during the first few storms. A bonded fiber matrix on the steeper strip and a standard hydroseed lawn mix on the flat part is a common split.
East side: repair and renovation
Settled neighborhoods tend to need lawn repair more than new lawns. Utility trenches, removed trees, regraded downspouts and dog paths leave bare patches. We fill and level, then match the surrounding grass as closely as we can.
West side: start from scratch
On newer lots the builder's grade is often rough. Our dirt work crew rakes out rocks, levels low spots and spreads topsoil, then we hydroseed. If the lot is part of an active site, we can also put in silt fence and protect curb inlets.
Soil we expect
Upland loess soils like the Sharpsburg series, which the USDA maps in Kansas and Missouri on slopes from 0 to 18 percent, are common around Johnson County. They grow strong turf but compact easily under trucks, so we break up packed ground before seeding.

Shawnee Questions
Our yard slopes toward the woods by Shawnee Mission Park. Will seed hold?
On a steep strip we use a heavier bonded fiber matrix so rain does not carry seed and soil into the trees.
Can you patch a trench across an older Shawnee lawn?
Yes. We settle the fill, top it with soil and seed it to blend with the existing grass.
Our builder left rocks and ruts. Do you fix that first?
Yes. Our crew levels the lot, removes surface rock and spreads topsoil before seeding.
Why does my soil get so hard?
Silty soils compact under traffic and equipment. Loosening before seeding helps roots go deeper.
