Seeding Through Storm Season
Hydroseeding in Kearney has to stand up to the weather. Kearney sits in north central Clay County, in Tornado Alley, a region prone to tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, with most of its severe weather arriving in spring and summer. A freshly seeded yard caught by a downpour before it roots can lose much of its seed in an afternoon.
Building a lawn that survives the first storm
The slurry itself is part of the answer. Hydromulch fibers and tackifier bind seed to the soil so it does not float away as easily as dry seed and straw. On sloped lots and swales, we add straw blankets. And when we can, we schedule seeding for late summer, after the most active storm months.
Fast growth on old farm ground
Kearney's population jumped 53.2 percent between 2000 and 2010 and another 24.1 percent by 2020. Housing units doubled from 1,995 in 2000 to 4,002 in 2020. New streets keep spreading into the open ground around the old town.
What new lots look like
Former pasture usually has decent topsoil, but construction scrapes it off, compacts what is left and leaves ruts. We loosen compacted ground, replace topsoil where it was stripped and fine grade so the yard drains away from the house before we seed.
Rural roots
The town was settled in 1856 as Centerville. The James farm, where Jesse James was born in 1847, lies just northeast of town and is listed on the National Register. Larger acreage lots on the edges of Kearney sometimes need seeding of pasture, ditches or drainage swales rather than a manicured lawn.

Kearney Questions
What happens if a big storm hits right after you seed?
Tackifier and mulch hold most seed in place. If a storm washes areas before they sprout, we look at it and reseed those spots.
Can you seed ditches and pasture on acreage lots?
Yes. We can spray pasture or erosion control mixes on larger, rural areas.
Why does my new Kearney yard have so many ruts?
Construction equipment leaves them. We regrade and fill before seeding.
Is late summer really better than spring here?
Usually, because the strongest storms tend to come in spring and early summer.
