Lake Country on a Limestone Ridge

Hydroseeding in Lee's Summit means paying attention to two things: rock and water. The city got its name from sitting at the highest point on the railroad between Kansas City and St. Louis, and a 20-foot-thick limestone layer called the Bethany Falls runs underneath it, forming bluffs near Longview Lake.

Thin soil over rock

Where limestone is close to the surface, topsoil can be shallow, and grass on a thin layer dries out fast in July. On those lots we usually recommend bringing in topsoil before seeding and choosing a drought-tolerant fescue blend. Blasting or rock removal is outside our work, but we grade and spread soil once the rock work is done.

Six lakes, lots of shoreline

Lake Jacomo, Lake Winnebago, Raintree Lake, Lakewood Lakes, Longview Lake and Blue Springs Lake all sit in or around the city. Longview Lake was created by damming the Little Blue River. Yards that slope toward a lake or cove should not shed loose soil into it, so we use erosion control blankets on banks and keep bare areas covered until grass takes hold.

New Longview

Lumber baron Robert A. Long built the 1,780-acre Longview Farm starting in 1912, and part of it became the New Longview neighborhood in 2004. Former estate pasture and new streets sit side by side there, which means a mix of renovation and new lawn installation.

Steady suburban growth

The population went from about 2,500 in 1950 to 101,108 in 2020. Builders here need silt fence, inlet protection and final stabilization seeding, and homeowners in older neighborhoods often need overseeding or repair after drainage work.

Lee's Summit Questions

My yard has rock just under the surface. Can grass still grow?

Yes, with enough soil on top. We usually add topsoil to shallow spots so roots do not dry out in summer.

We back up to a lake cove. How do you keep mud out of the water?

We stake erosion control blankets on the bank and use silt fence during grading if the slope is long.

Do you work in New Longview?

Yes, on both new lawn installation and renovation of older turf.

Which grass handles Lee's Summit summers best?

A turf-type tall fescue blend is a common choice for sun. Shady lots may need a different mix.
